This secluded beach on the Big Island of Hawaii is considered to be the single most important nesting site for the Hawksbill turtle in the USA. These elementary school kids got a treat as they were able to witness the hatchlings emerge for the first time from their nest and head straight for the ocean. Normally this takes place during the dark of night so the emergence of these hatchlings in the late afternoon is a unique event. Each known nest is monitored to ensure that there are no disturbances and to make sure each hatchling finds its way into the ocean. All video used here was shot and supplied by the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Service. I found it a very enjoyable edit; how could I go wrong with cute turtle babies as the subject?
